Washington, D.C.

Hidden in DC: The Secrets of Cafe Mozart

This unassuming storefront is a German deli, bar and restaurant all in one.

From first impression, Café Mozart—located mere blocks from the White House—looks like a typical German-style deli, stocked with all sorts of sausages and ham, as well as European sweets such as Toblerone and Milka on the shelves.

But What’s Behind Door #1? At the back of the deli is a doorway. On the other side of it, you’ll find yourself in a bar with really good German and other imported beers, served in small (16 ounces), medium (24 ounces) or large (the world-famous boot).

And Now, for Door #2… If that’s not enough, wander deeper in and you’ll see another door at the back of the bar. Through it, you’re suddenly in an upscale German and Austrian restaurant, with live classical piano, guitar or accordion music most nights.
